"O bubble blast, how long can'st last?"

“O bubble blast, how long can’st last?
that always art a breaking,
No sooner blown, but dead and gone,
ev’n as a word that’s speaking.
O whilst I live this grace me give,
I doing good may be,
Then death’s arrest I shall count best,
because it’s Thy decree;”
-"Upon a Fit of Sickness, Anno 1632"

In this section from "Upon a Fit of Sickness, Anno 1632" Anne describes the hardships she faces as a puritan emigrant. She was only 19 years old when she traveled along with her husband and parents to new England. Anne faced many struggles she was not used to because she came from a great lifestyle and now it seems like death is inevitable. When they arrived the people were starving and a harsh winter and sickness had killed many of them. This poem shows Anne's struggle between earthly struggles and her faith and trusting God's will.

  1. She was a very strong Christian from what her poems contain. I really like how she starts it with "O bubble blast"... what on earth does that even mean??

  2. I think it is really moving that her faith is so strong in that she will think death the best because it is God's will. Too often I guess we expect that God will do what we think is best and then we don't like it when he does otherwise. Really cool title though!
