Guessing Games are Fun

Soft as a gosling yet transparent like film. The world is topsy-turvy and dim but it's the best way to be. I love my large family, they mean the world to me though I'm not the marrying type. Many are scared of me coming near them even though it's only because I'm hungry. I'm small but important and you'd hate to see me go. I'm rarely seen but it excites people when they see me. I'm a great listener too. I prefer night to day and warm weather to cold. What am I?
