The Southern vs. Northern Accent Debate

What is in a accent? Is a rose by an other twang still a rose? Well, yes but the people of America still take great pride in the accents of their homeland. Each dialectic in our country has connotations of different things. A sweet Southern drawl brings to mind memories of mason jar sweet tea on your back porch in the midst of an unusually strong summer. Northern accents remind you of the bright fall colors of Boston or the bustling streets of New York City. American accents have their own symbolism and culture surrounding them which is why they are also wrapped in conflict. The most of controversial of these debates is the use of 'y'all'. The term 'y'all' is most commonly used in the south to describe a group of people. Unfortunately, the rest of the country has yet to learn the value of such a useful phrase and are left with an extra syllable- 'you guys'. This is the most major of all divisions among accents and it may never be decided which phrase is "correct". Until then, I shall be content with my y'all's and Southern sweet tea.

  1. I agree with your y'alls and sweet tea. Personally, I find that Southern accents sound more welcoming than Northern accents.
