Early Birds VS. Night Owls

You may have heard the saying, "The early bird gets the worm," but do morning people really have an advantage over night owls? There are two types of people that divides America, early birds and night owls.

Ben Franklin once said, "early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise," but studies have shown that this is not exactly true. The researchers analyzed a national sample of men and women who'd been surveyed years earlier on sleep patterns as well as measures related to health, wealth, and wisdom. There were 356 early birds in the group (in bed before 11 p.m., up before 8 a.m.) and 318 owls (in bed after 11, up after 8). Contrary to Franklin's decree, night owls had larger incomes and seemed to score higher on cognitive tests than did morning birds. Although, Franklin's adage about morning types being healthy does seem to hold in one regard - a number of studies have found that night owls are partial to bad habits such as drinking...

There are many differences between the two:
  • Early birds are persistent, cooperative, agreeable, conscientious, and proactive. They also procrastinate less and tend to be happier.
  • Night owls are more creative, have higher cognitive abilities, and are known to be risk takers.
Also, society largely runs on a 9-to-5 schedule, so night owls can be at a disadvantage.
A new study by Jawbone has mapped when Americans fall asleep - The results are as follows:
Bedtime
Unsurprisingly New York has the most night owls with an average sleep time of 12:07am, and Hawaii has many who go to bed much earlier at around 10:31pm (they probably get up earlier too).
In conclusion to this battle over bedtime, night owls are not lagging behind in life, they are just lagging behind in time!
So the question is, are you up early in the morning or are you more energized during the evening? :)

  1. This is so interesting! I really did think that early birds would have more of a "success" rate… Good thing I'm a night owl, I guess!

  3. But, I stay up late AND get up early. What does that make me? An early owl?

    1. Yeah, I think it is an intermediate of both because there are different types of sleeping patterns other than the early birds and night owls but it could also just be insomnia.
