Pop vs. Soda vs. Coke

The United States of America are often not so united. There are several different issues that can divide the country. One of the most divisive is that of SodaPop. There has always been a big debate over the proper name of carbonated beverages. Many call it pop. Many call it soda. However, many in the south simply call it Coke.

This picture from popvssoda.com breaks the division down into regions. The website has polled people all over the country and records the data by county. For example, in Forsyth County, out of the 200 people that have contributed to the survey online, Pop receives 10 (5%) votes, Soda 43 (22%), Coke 119 (60%), and Other 28 (14%). It is a unique survey, and I suggest you vote in order to make you voice heard. I generally refer to it as either Coke or Soda (never Pop) - I use the two interchangeably. Comment your preference below.

This post is dedicated to Christopher Joseph McClenathen (my favorite Yankee).

  1. I have cousins who live up in Michigan and we always get into this 'soda vs. pop' debate when they come down. Everyone where they live calls it pop but whenever they visit they have to get used to us calling it soda.

  2. But Devin, where is the fourth option? What about the people who call it Seltzer. They deserve a voice.

  4. I call it a soft drink/soda. And I agree with Josh. Every soda name should have an equal voice.

  5. Seltzer isn't even soda though, it's carbonated water. It actually makes no sense to call it seltzer. In fact the only case when seltzer is actually a drink is when it's called "seltzer water". With this in mind, I believe that seltzer (like pepsi or carbonated sweet drink) falls under the "other" category if indeed you consider seltzer a soda.

  6. In New England, the old-timers call it tonic. It's soda to me.

  7. This brings back memory of our pointless arguments with CJ trying to convince him that it was soda... After a while I just stopped caring what people called it, same thing just different names.

  8. I usually call it by the brand name. I think that's because my family has moved back and forth between the north and the south, so neither of the names really stuck for me.
